Way back when I was just a little freshman in high school, a big decision changed the course of my life.

Being a military kid, there was an all but guarantee that I would be moving between my junior and senior year. Rather than jeopardize my education, I chose to deconflict and graduate a year early. At the time, I had a vague idea of what that would mean for my future, mostly that it would require a lot of work. But as I went through high school, and as God worked in my life, my gap year began to take shape. I think freshman-Grace would be thrilled to see where I am now.

Throughout high school was when I really became active in my faith. God put it on my heart to start a Bible study, called Jesus Club, at my school, and for potentially the first time, I listened to that tug on my heart in a courageous way. God worked through me and that club in such incredible ways, too numerous to have one blog post (but I love talking about it, so there will probably be more stories to come). On top of that, I started getting involved in my church's youth group. It became my central community, and I grew so much through the teachings, worship, and fellowship. In this growth, the Great Commission started to be heavy on my heart. God didn't make it optional, it's literally our calling in life. To clarify, I do believe the Great Commission can be lived out in "every day life" by being a witness for Christ in my hometown. But I have an unique opportunity that many people my age don't have: months of time to dedicate to missions work. I would be remiss to not do something bold for God with this time.

I first came across World Race Missions in a desperate hunt for opportunities open to people under 18. When I did stumble across it, I was in awe. It seemed so right! Fast forward much deliberation, uncertainty, and prayer, and I was on my first interest call. Any doubts I had before were quieted as I talked with them, and an overwhelming wave of peace and reassurance took over. While I was fairly certain this was the missions organization God wanted for me, I was still waiting for the moment when He closed the door. But, with every step, He continued to bless it, until I got the email saying I was accepted.

As for which region of the world I would go to, I had three options: South America, Africa, or Southeast Asia. I prayed over these locations a lot because unlike other missionaries, I didn't have one particular location I felt led to. But, as I prayed, I realized I actually kind of did. Since at least middle school, I have wanted to explore Asia so badly. Once I got a bit older, I learned that many of the organizations I'm passionate about have a large presence in Asia, including International Justice Mission (hopefully my future employer!!). As I researched what the Southeast Asia's trip would focus on, it aligned seamlessly with my strengths: working with kids, building community, teaching Sunday school lessons, and building relationships through trust and genuine connection. It became clear that God wanted me in Asia, which is pretty exciting.

As of writing this blog, I currently have 122 days until my group and I launch. That seems like a while away, but there's a lot of work to be done before I'm ready to go, both physically and spiritually. As I prepare, I'll need all the support you can give, particularly in prayer. As exciting as this trip is, I am aware of the demanding challenges - from tent living in Nepal to emotional exhaustion. In order to serve the Lord well I'm going to need to be overflowing with His love and moving in His strength. Please consider praying that the Lord would be working in my heart to prepare me so that I may glorify Him well on this trip.

Thank you so much. Love you!

Grace
